Web IRC: Chat on IRC Right in Your Browser
Web IRC lets you join IRC chat rooms from any web browser — no download, no install, no account. On TwistedNET, open chat.twistednet.org, pick a nickname, and you are chatting in #twisted within seconds. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iPhone, and every connection is encrypted with TLS.
What is a web IRC client?
// IRC without installing anything
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is an open chat protocol that has been running since 1988. Traditionally you needed a desktop program such as mIRC or HexChat to connect. A web IRC client does the same job inside a browser tab: the web page connects to the IRC network for you, so you get the same channels, the same people and the same commands — just without installing software.
That makes web IRC the fastest way to try IRC, to chat from a locked-down work or school computer, or to drop into a channel from your phone.
How to chat on IRC in your browser
// four steps, under a minute
- Open chat.twistednet.org in any modern browser.
- Choose a nickname. No email, phone number or sign-up is required.
- Join a channel. You land in
#twisted, the main lobby. Type/join #devor/join #arcadeto hop into other popular channels. - Start typing. That is it. If you want to keep your nickname, register it with
/msg NickServ REGISTER password email.
Web IRC options on TwistedNET
// pick the one that fits
| Option | Best for | Address |
|---|---|---|
| TwistedNET Web Chat | Instant chat, nothing to install | chat.twistednet.org |
| CryptIRC (hosted) | Staying online 24/7 — a bouncer is built in, so you never miss messages | client.twistednet.org/cryptirc |
| Tor web chat | Anonymous chat from Tor Browser — no JavaScript needed, works at the “Safest” level | See the Tor IRC guide |
| Desktop or terminal client | Power users, scripting, multiple networks | irc.twistednet.org port 6697 (TLS) — choose a client |
Web IRC vs a desktop IRC client
// what you gain and what you give up
| Web IRC | Desktop client | |
|---|---|---|
| Install needed | No | Yes |
| Works on phones | Yes, in the browser | Needs a mobile app |
| Works on locked-down PCs | Usually | Often blocked |
| Scripts and plugins | Limited | Full (Python, Perl, Lua, mIRC scripting) |
| Stays connected when closed | Only with a bouncer such as CryptIRC | Only while running, or with a bouncer |
| Encryption | TLS (HTTPS) | TLS on port 6697 |
Many people start on web IRC and later move to a desktop client like HexChat, WeeChat or Irssi. Both connect to the same network, so your channels and nickname come with you.
Is web IRC safe and private?
// what we log, and what we don’t
The TwistedNET web chat is served over HTTPS and connects to the network over an encrypted link. TwistedNET keeps zero message logs, does not track users and does not sell data. Remember that anything you say in a public channel can be seen by everyone in that channel, on any network. For the strongest anonymity, use the Tor .onion service instead of the clearnet web chat.
Useful commands for web IRC

Web IRC FAQ
Do I need an account to use web IRC?
No. Open the web chat, choose a nickname and start chatting. Registering your nickname with NickServ is optional and only protects the name for you.
Can I use web IRC on my phone?
Yes. The web chat works in mobile browsers on Android and iPhone. If you want notifications and to stay connected while your phone is asleep, use CryptIRC, which has a bouncer built in.
Is web IRC free?
Yes. TwistedNET, its web chat and the hosted CryptIRC client are all free, with no ads and no premium tiers.
Can I use web IRC anonymously?
For real anonymity, open the TwistedNET Tor web chat in Tor Browser, or connect a desktop client to our .onion address. Both are explained in the IRC over Tor guide.
What is the difference between web IRC and IRC?
None at the network level. Web IRC is simply IRC accessed from a browser. You talk to the same people in the same channels as someone using mIRC or WeeChat. New to it all? Read What is IRC?
